About the Series:
The Classic War Movie Collection is not just for film
buffs, and not just for military fanatics. It puts movies in context, bringing
history to life in a totally new way. This collection brings together some of
the greatest films of the genre.
The magazine opens with a critique of the film,
describing the setting, the main characters and the thrust of the plot. This is
followed up with a look at how the film was made, putting the cinematography in
the context of the technology of the time - the advances in special effects,
from the films of the great sea battles made in World War II (using models) to
the computer graphic technology of today.
An equal part of the magazine is devoted to the historical context of
the action and an analysis of how true to life the film is: what was the
political and military motivation behind the action? Did the characters
portrayed in the film actually exist? Were they as heroic/brutal/romantic as
they were depicted in the film? Did the events actually happen as shown on
celluloid?
Each issue contains the following strands:
Feature Movie:
A detailed look at the plot and characters, using stills from the film, to help
you get the most enjoyment out of the DVD. This article will not
completely give away the plot and its ending, but will be an appraisal of the
film, with cast list and details of the actors involved
In the Making:
The low-down on the making of the movie, discussing such questions as how the
producers raised the cash, how the cast was selected, locations used, special
effects, gossip, the book behind the film.
The Real War:
Putting the film in its historical context, this section looks at the
background to the events of the movie, describing the international situation
at the time, the political and military tactics and strategies, and the final
outcome of the relevant phase of the relevant war.
Fact or
Fiction?
This section analyses any material that the screenplay was based on, how true
to life the film is, and draws parallels between actual incidents and scenes in
the film.
